How to send Diwali messages to all your customers
The free WhatsApp Business app works for a few people. For your whole customer list, it has two limits that catch many businesses out during festivals:
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API | |
|---|---|---|
| Who receives it | Only people who saved your number | Every customer who opted in |
| Size | Up to 256 contacts per broadcast list | Grows with your messaging limit |
| Personal name | No | Yes, using variables like {{1}} |
| Images and buttons | Image only | Image, video, "Shop now" and quick-reply buttons |
| Reports | Basic | Delivered, read and clicked for every customer |
See the full comparison of the WhatsApp Business API and the app.
Turning a message into an approved template
- Choose the Marketing category. Meta treats festival greetings and offers as marketing messages.
- Replace the brackets with variables. For example: "Dear {{1}}, may this Diwali light up your home with happiness. Thank you for being part of the {{2}} family." Do not start or end the message with a variable, and add sample values when you submit.
- Add an image and buttons. A festive banner with a "Shop now" or "View offers" button gets more clicks than plain text.
- Add an opt-out option, such as a "Stop promotions" quick-reply button, so customers can choose not to receive offers.
- Submit early. Meta can take up to 24 hours to review a template, so submit your Diwali templates by Dhanteras at the latest.
Read our full template guidelines to avoid rejections.
What it costs
On QuickMessage, a marketing message to an Indian number costs ₹0.96, excluding GST. Sending a Diwali greeting to 1,000 customers costs about ₹960 plus GST. Replies your customers send back are free, and your replies within 24 hours are free for the first 1,000 each month. See full pricing.
Tips for festive WhatsApp messages
- Send offers early, wishes on the day. Offers work best around Dhanteras; greetings on the morning of 8 November.
- Message only customers who opted in. Unwanted messages lead to blocks and can lower your quality rating.
- Use the customer's name. "Dear Priya" feels personal; "Dear Customer" feels like spam.
- Keep it short. Two or three lines and one clear button.
- Plan for replies. Festival campaigns bring questions. A chatbot can answer common ones while your team takes a break.
- Do not send too many. One greeting and one or two offer reminders are enough for the whole festival.
